Traveling to Europe in 2026? Here’s What UK Travellers Need to Know

Planning a trip to Europe next year? There are some changes coming to border entry that you’ll want to be aware of.

Many UK travelers might not yet know about the new Entry/Exit System (EES) or the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), so we’ve put together a simple guide to keep you prepared.

What’s EES?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital border check system that replaces those traditional passport stamps. From 12 October 2025, your entry, exit, and even any refusals will be recorded electronically when you travel to the Schengen Area.

Who does it affect?

EES applies to non-EU nationals, including UK travelers, whether you usually need a visa or travel visa-free. A few exemptions exist, so it’s worth double-checking before you go.

Why it matters:

  • Faster border checks

  • Stronger security

  • Less time waiting at passport control

And what about ETIAS?

Once EES is fully in place by April 2026, the ETIAS system will follow. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers entering the Schengen Area.

Key points:

  • Launching in late 2026

  • You’ll need approval before you travel, similar to the US ESTA system

  • UK travelers will need this as part of their travel prep

For now, all you really need to do is keep your passport valid and be ready for a slightly different border experience next time you travel.

Schengen Area Stay Rules

  • Maximum 90 days in any 180-day period

  • Applies no matter how many Schengen countries you visit

  • The 180-day period is rolling

Schengen countries include: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Traveling to Europe in 2026 will be a little different, but with a bit of prep, your trip should be smooth and hassle-free.

Stay informed, and enjoy your adventures across the continent!
